Lake Skadar National Park

Lake Skadar, the largest lake in the Balkans, sits on the border between Montenegro and Albania and is a remarkable natural wonder known for its diverse ecosystems and rich cultural heritage. This picturesque lake covers an area of approximately 530 square kilometres (204 square miles) and features a unique combination of wetlands, river channels, and steep mountain peaks that provide a breathtaking landscape.

The lake is surrounded by historic towns, seven monasteries, and fortresses (Lessendro and Žabljak Črnojeviča), which add to its cultural importance. Its beauty and ecological significance earned it a place on UNESCO's Tentative List in 2011, recognising it as an area of outstanding universal value. Lake Skadar National Park, established in 1983, provides a protected area for the variety of species that call this vibrant ecosystem home.

Lake Skadar is famous for its wilderness, making it a paradise for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. It is home to over 280 species of birds, including the famous Dalmatian pelican, herons, kingfishers, ibis and many more. The rich biodiversity of the area is simply breathtaking.
